What Changed

Is FAQ Schema Still Worth Using?

Google Retired FAQ Rich Results in 2026

If you added FAQ schema to win the expandable question-and-answer dropdowns under your Google listing, that feature no longer exists. Google had already limited FAQ rich results to government and health sites in 2023, so most sites lost them years ago. FAQPage is still a valid Schema.org type, and leaving the markup in place causes no problems and does not affect rankings.

Its Value Now Is Comprehension, Not Space

Clearly structured question-and-answer content is a format search engines and AI answer engines can read and quote. Google’s own guidance is that no special schema is required for AI Overviews, and that structured data must match the visible content. Treat FAQ schema as a clean label on genuinely useful, visible Q&A content. It identifies the structure of your questions and answers; it does not guarantee a citation or a ranking.

AI Search

FAQ Schema and GEO

AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews build responses from clearly structured passages on the web. Question-led content maps onto the way people prompt these tools. AI systems can quote clear, self-contained answers with or without FAQPage markup; the markup labels the structure and nothing more, so it does not guarantee a citation.

Checklist Before You Publish

  • Each Question needs a name and an acceptedAnswer text that match the question and answer visitors can read on the page. Never add hidden questions.
  • Avoid “best”, “number 1” or “guaranteed results”. This tool flags those words.
  • For health, legal or financial topics, say that results vary and a professional assesses each case.
  • One FAQPage block per page, and no duplicate questions.

FAQ Schema Checker: Test Your Markup

Paste the JSON-LD into two free schema markup checkers: validator.schema.org for the Schema.org structure, and Google’s Rich Results Test to confirm Google can read it.

FAQ

FAQ Schema Questions, Answered

What is FAQPage schema?

Schema.org structured data that tells machines a page contains a list of questions with answers. It is written as JSON-LD inside a script tag of type application/ld+json.

How do I use this FAQ schema generator?

Type a question and its answer, click “Add question” for the next pair, and copy the code on the right. It updates as you type.

How do I add FAQ schema to my page?

Paste the whole block into the page’s head or before the closing body tag. On WordPress, use Rank Math, Yoast, Code Snippets or a Custom HTML block. Then run Google’s Rich Results Test.

Does FAQ schema still work in 2026?

Yes, but the payoff changed. FAQ rich results stopped appearing in Google Search on May 7, 2026, after Google had limited them to government and health sites in 2023, so the markup no longer earns extra space on Google. It is still valid and still helps search engines and AI tools understand the structure of your content, but it does not guarantee any placement or citation.

Will FAQ schema get me into AI Overviews or ChatGPT?

Nothing guarantees it. Google says no special schema is needed for AI Overviews. What helps is clear, short, self-contained answers that are visible on the page; the markup only labels them.

Should I remove my existing FAQ schema?

No need. Google confirms leaving it in place is fine, as long as the schema matches the visible content.

Does FAQ schema help rankings?

Not directly. Google states it is not a ranking factor. A good question-and-answer section does help a page answer search intent more fully.

Can I see an FAQ page schema example?

Yes. Type one question and answer in the generator above and the code panel shows a complete FAQ page schema example: an FAQPage with a mainEntity list of Question items, each with an acceptedAnswer. Copy it as a starting point for your own page.

Does AI Search Mention Your Business?

Schema is one signal. See whether ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI tools mention your business when customers ask about services like yours.
